Battery trimmers make line reloads easier, but the head still needs clean routing and the correct line diameter. This guide is for EGO 56V-style cordless trimmers; confirm your head type before buying parts.
Before you reload
Remove the battery. Lay the trimmer so the head is easy to reach and brush away grass dust around the spool housing. Check the eyelets for grooves; worn eyelets cut fresh line quickly and make a good reload look bad.
Line choice
For most residential trimming, use the diameter specified by the head. Thicker line is not automatically better. It can reduce feed reliability, load the motor harder, and make the operator blame the spool when the problem is really mismatch.
Reload workflow
- Align the head arrows or loading marks.
- Feed equal lengths of line through both sides.
- Wind the head slowly while holding light tension on both ends.
- Stop with balanced line length on each side.
- Trim excess line only after the first spin-up.

Balanced line matters because vibration starts small and becomes obvious only after the head is already under speed.
First spin-up
Install the battery and run the trimmer briefly over open grass. Listen for uneven vibration. If the head shakes, stop and make both line ends the same length before edging along hard surfaces.
Common reload mistakes
- Feeding mismatched line lengths through the head.
- Using brittle old line that was stored in heat.
- Skipping the eyelet inspection.
- Trimming near concrete before confirming feed.
